A good way to determine how the paint will actually look is to paint a moveable and repositionable surface. Find something that is a similar material and color as the walls you are trying to paint. Also, make any trim colors proportionate to the rest of the wall color. By doing this, you can see how the trim color will match with the rest of the walls.

For this test piece, you should use the same paint you want your professional painters to use. Make sure the finish matches as well. For example, if you intend to use a matte finish on your wall, the test paint should also be a matte finish.

This same idea can be applied for your home’s exterior walls. Paint a sample surface piece the color you are thinking for your exterior walls. Include the trim color as well. Then leave it somewhere against your house where you can note what it looks like at different times of the day. You can easily reposition it as well to see how it looks on different sides of the house. By seeing how the color looks in different light, you can determine whether or not you will choose that color or try another one.
